What is a Doula?
This word had further come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth that provides, emotional, physical and informational support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. Doula's do not perform medical tasks.
Doula's may offer information and prenatal support and also help in the making of a birth plan. During labor a doula offers support on comfort measures such as relaxation, breathing, positioning and movement. The most crucial role of a doula is to provide continuous emotional reassurance and comfort. A doula's goal is to help a laboring woman feel safe and nurtured allowing her to relax and to have a satisfying birth.
"I knew she was there and she just melted into action, whispering in my ear, reminding me at every turn how strong I was and simply that I could do it." - A new mother, speaking of her doula, The Doula Book
